In lessons with Tommy, students embark on a comprehensive musical journey that encompasses various aspects of playing and musicianship. They develop a foundation built on producing a quality sound and mastering fundamental techniques. Exploring a diverse range of musical styles and genres, students broaden their musical horizons and cultivate strong aural skills.

Throughout their lessons, students gain proficiency in reading both treble and bass clef comfortably. They become confident sight-readers and adept at transposing music into different keys on sight, enhancing their versatility as musicians. In addition, Tommy fosters an environment that encourages creativity, allowing students to express themselves and develop their own musical voices.

 
 

Expertise and Professional Training: Guided by Experience and Knowledge

Experience and formal training form the backbone of Tommy's expertise. Currently serving as the band director at Banyan, Cypress, and EARThS elementary schools, as well as the High-Brass Specialist at Chaparral Middle School, Los Cerritos Middle School, and Westlake High School, he brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to his teaching. His background includes teaching mellophone during marching band seasons, and he has been a horn clinician at various high schools. Tommy's experience extends to coaching chamber music groups during a residency at Oakland University and maintaining a successful horn studio with students achieving superior ratings and earning top ensemble placements and honor band participation.

Tommy's educational journey includes earning a Bachelor of Music from the University of Southern California in 2017 and a Master of Music from the University of Michigan in 2019. Throughout his studies, he has had the privilege of learning from esteemed pedagogues such as Louise MacGillivray, Annie Bosler, Kristy Morrell, Steven Becknell, Adam Unsworth, and Bryan Kennedy.
