Newbury Park
Home to a population of about 28K people, Newbury Park makes up 40% of Thousand Oaks’ total land area. Although Newbury Park technically falls into Thousand Oaks city limits, it certainly has its own unique personality. Newbury Park remains a significantly more equestrian community, however more recently the town has attracted various tech companies.

Newbury Park is home to the Stagecoach Inn Museum. Originally called the Grand Union Hotel, The Stagecoach Inn Museum was used as a hotel and rest stop, and also post office, restaurant, church, and school! Today, the Stagecoach Inn stands as a historical museum and appears on the National Register of Historic Places. The museum includes a rebuilt Timber school, a pioneer house, and a Chumash “ap”. You can also find the Satwiwa Native American Indian Culture Center in the mountains of Newbury Park. This center was established to honor the rich heritage and influence of the Chumash Indians. “Satwiwa” means “the bluffs” and was the name of a Chumash Village. Newbury Park is also home to the Newbury Park Jazz Festival, which has hosted numerous grammy award-winning performers, such as Gordon Goodwin.
Parks and Recreation
Newbury Park offers a natural environment, integrating hundreds of miles of trails into its community. It borders the Boney Mountains State Wilderness Area and the Santa Monica Mountains to the south, the Los Robles Open Space Area to the east, and the Arroyo Conejo Open Space Area and Wildwood Regional Park to the north. Located within the town lies the Potrero Open Space! You can also find the Hope Nature Reserve in eastern Newbury Park. The hikes in Newbury park can show you beautiful views of the Pacific Ocean, Malibu, Santa Monica, Conejo Valley, and Channel Islands. Don’t hesitate to explore Newbury’s beautiful scenery!

Early Beginnings
The Chumash people were the first to inhabit this area almost 10,000 years ago. They had three villages across the town—one located at the Southern edge of town, and the other two along modern-day Ventu Park Road. Newbury Park is home to ancient burial sights, most along the Santa Monica Mountains. Boney Mountain, a popular hike for the town, remains a sacred site for the Chumash, where sacred ceremonies and traditional dances are often held. To learn more about the Chumash, visit the Chumash Indian Museum. It’s dedicated to preserving Chumash culture and history and promoting their present-day influence.
Newbury Park is named Egbert Starr Newbury who owned thousands of acres of land in the Conejo Valley. He was among the first to purchase Rancho El Conejo land from the Spanish in the 1870s. This is when the area began to grow! The Grand Union Hotel was built along the stagecoach route from San Francisco to Los Angeles, and it operated as a rest stop, pleasure resort, and gathering place. You can still visit the Historical Stagecoach Inn today! It was the first business Venture in Conejo Valley.
