History

Early Beginnings

The Chumash people were the first to inhabit this area almost 10,000 years ago. They had villages, settlements, and Summer encampments in various locations across the Conejo Valley. To learn more about the Chumash, visit the Chumash Indian Museum. It’s dedicated to preserving Chumash culture and history, and promoting their present-day influence. Spanish colonizers first came to this land in 1542, and claimed it for themselves. Over the course of the 19th century, colonizers battled with the Chumash over land. In 1803, the land was named Conejo Valley, due to its abundance of rabbits. The area began to grow in the 1870s, when it became a rest area along the stagecoach route from San Francisco to Los Angeles. You can still visit the Historical Stagecoach Inn today! It was the first business Venture in Conejo Valley.
